Priyanka Chopra made it big in Bollyw
ood and subsequently in Hollywood on her own. She had no Godfather nor was she a star kid who is handed meaty
roles in a pristine platter as and when they desire it. She is a lady who lives her life on her own terms and makes her own career choices. So it was qui
te shocking to hear that she was rejected for a movie role for no other reason other than that she is a woman of color or in other words not white enough for Hollywood. This shocking revelation comes from an actress who plays a lead role in hugely successful TV series Quantico.
Chopra, in an interview with InStyle published on Tuesday, said she lost a role in Hollywood simply because she’s an actress of color and her agent was intimated about the rejection in 'very polite' terms. “I was out for a movie, and somebody [from the studio] called one of my agents and said, ’She’s wrong ― what word did they use? ― ‘physicality.’ So in my defense as an actor, I’m like, ‘Do I need to be skinnier? Do I need to get in shape? Do I need to have abs?’ Like, what does ‘wrong physicality’ mean?” Chopra told InStyle. “And then my agent broke it down for me. Like, ‘I think, Priyanka, they me
ant that they wanted someone who’s not brown.’”
hopra, who also was the winner of Miss World title in 2000, further revealed that for women stars of colour in Hollywood, huge pay disparity is a glaring reality that simply does not get the attention it deserves. The actress was quoted as saying that the amount you are paid in Hollywood is not proportional to the role you are essaying or the talent you have, but to the colour of your skin. "No one will say that a woman is getting paid less because she's a woman of colour, but the numbers mostly end up reflecting that," InStyle quoted Priyanka as saying.
It was, however, not Quantico’s star first brush with racism in the US. Earlier in 2016, when Priyanka was shooting for the second season of Quantico, she was reportedly questioned for sitting in the first class lounge at a US airport and an apology was later tendered. Miss Chopra is currently in Ireland shooting for the third season of Quantico, which premieres on April 2.
She was last seen in Baywatch and has two more movies Isn't It Romantic? and A Kid Like Jake in the pipeline. Miss Chopra is yet to announce her next Bollywood project.
ty in Hollywood is not a new phenomenon and this issue has been plaguing the industry for quite some time. The same is reflected in the list of 2017’s highest-paid actresses in Hollywood which unfortunately does not feature a single woman of colour. Taraji P. Henson in her memoir Around the Way Girl: A Memoir writes that she was paid less than 2 percent of what Brad Pitt made for “The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button.” To add insult to injury she was made to pay three months of hotel expenses from her own pocket.
