Gone Too Soon, Sushma Swaraj: A Leader That World Will Miss
Sushma Swaraj was born as Sushma Sharma.
The bold and fierce lady of Indian politics was born to shine. Sushma Swaraj was the only politician who had earned respect even outside the territory of the political world. She was praised and welcomed by the opposition parties as well. Considered as one of the most helpful and loyal politicians of her time, the politician had restored our faith in bureaucracy and had gathered applause from all over the world.
Born to Hardev Sharma and Shrimati Laxmi Devi on 14 February 1952. Sushma Swaraj was not born with a silver spoon. She came from a middle-class family. Ambala Cantt, Haryana was her birthplace.
Sushma Swaraj was a bright personality. All her achievements did no fall on her lap just like that. She created her own way through hard work and determination.
Sushma Swaraj had a connection with Pakistan. Her parents hailed from Dharampura area of Lahore, Pakistan. During her last visit to Pakistan, she had paid a visit to Dharampura also.
Sushma Swaraj started her practice as an advocate in the Supreme Court in the year 1973. But her political journey began in the early 1970s when she joined Akhil Bharti Vidyarthi Parishad.
Sushma Swaraj had created history in many ways. In 1979, when she was only 27, she became the youngest female to be elected as the State President of Janta Party, Haryana State. She was also the first female Spokesperson of a national political party in India. Swaraj had earned many firsts during her entire career. She was BJPs first female Chief Minister, General Secretary Leader of Opposition, Union Cabinet Minister, Spokesperson and Minister of External Affairs.
While serving as an External Affairs Minister she chided Amazon for selling doormats depicting Indian flag. She tweeted to the Indian Embassy and asked them to take up the matter with Amazon Canada. She said, "Indian High Commission in Canada: This is unacceptable. Please take this up with Amazon at the highest level."
In a series of tweets, she said, "Amazon must tender unconditional apology. They must withdraw all products insulting our national flag immediately."
"If this is not done forthwith, we will not grant Indian Visa to any Amazon official. We will also rescind the Visas issued earlier."
Sushma Swaraj was an indigenous down to earth personality. Indian values and culture were deeply rooted in her. She was a proud Indian with values. An almost perfect leader enjoyed a blissful married life. She enjoyed a heart-warming camaraderie with husband Swaraj Kaushal. Their love started during their college days. Deeply in love, Sushma wanted to quit her political career because she wanted to spend some more time with her husband.
The couple got married when Emergency hit India on July 13, 1975. Though the decision of spending their life together was not an easy affair for the couple. The two had to face families objection as Swaraj came from an orthodox Haryana family. After marriage, Sushma willingly went on to take her husband’s name as her surname. The couple had a daughter named Bansuri Swaraj. She also went on to become a lawyer.
The 67-year-old BJP leader succumbed to cardiac arrest on Tuesday evening.
